What's trending with RV's?

Celebrate Summer!

2017 is being called "the year of the RV".

Whether you’re new to RVing or have been doing it for years, you probably have an interest in what’s going on in the RV industry. At Leale’s we keep up-to-date with the newest trends, so this is what we’re finding in 2017:

  • Outdoor recreation is booming and RVing has become more popular than ever, with a big increase since the recession in the early 2000s.
  • RV sales are climbing with no slowdown in sight.
  • RVs are not just for vacations anymore. In recent years there is has been a dramatic increase in people living in their RVs “(Full Timers”).
  • 2017 is also seeing an increase in trailers and 5th wheels.
  • RVing isn’t mostly for the senior set anymore; more and more adults in their 20s and 30s are discovering the wonders of RV camping. However, the post retirement set still dominates this market.
  • As the motorhome industry has become more popular, RV designs are getting more interesting and efficient, becoming lighter, more aerodynamic, and fuel efficient.
  • RVs, as well as tow vehicles, are getting smaller, with an increase in innovative designs. For example, check out some of the new teardrop trailers.
  • RV technology is certainly becoming more advanced. Some RVs are now equipped with “smart home” systems. RV campgrounds, as well as RVs, are integrating smartphone technology.
  • National parks and the KOA campground system are very popular, with a large increase in occupancy rates. RVers are finding camping in these locations highly desirable.

KOA campgrounds and national parks are increasing in popularity for RV camping.

Is that water damage?

Last year we hoped for rain and this year we got it, and then we got some more. With all the rain we’ve had this past winter, we’re seeing a lot of RVs with damage from water leaks. It’s important to take care of those leaks right away because they can cause all kinds of problems. Unfortunately, problems often actually appear after the rain has stopped. So, if you suspect a water leak in your RV, get it found and fixed before it leads to serious damage.

Roof leak caused extensive water damage, including the ceiling and light fixtures.

At Leale’s we use a very effective leak detection system, SealTech:

  • Tests air flowing through an opening (leak).
  • The test uses soapy water that produces a bubble at the site of the leak.
  • Draws outside air into an RV through the roof vent.
  • The air is drawn in and then dispersed to create a positive interior pressure.
  • The resulting difference in air pressure between the inside and outside of the RV causes air to escape outward through any holes (leaks).
  • The soapy water solution is applied to suspicious areas resulting in visible bubbles over each leak.

Notice the bubbles on RV exterior during the SealTech test by our technician.

Remember, RV water leaks can be tricky. The location of the actual leak is often found in a different location than where the water damage can be seen. Every RV interior design is different. However, our technicians use this method to successfully diagnose leaks.

Leale’s technicians will give your RV a comprehensive leak test using SealTech.

A few more things to take along in your RV.

Whether you’re an experienced RVer or a newbie, here is a list of things to seriously consider packing in your RV.

  • Easy-to-reach emergency supply kit
Purchase a kit or create your own. Fill it with first aid supplies, maybe an extra flashlight, water, sunscreen, cold pack, bug repellent, etc. Things you may need to get to in a hurry. Keep it within easy reach of the driver’s seat.
  • Additional compact flashlight
A flashlight is one of the most important pieces of camping equipment. And you can never have too many when RV camping. It’s wise to stow one of those tough tactical flashlights. They survive temperature extremes and impacts so you will too.
  • Charging stand for your Smart phone
While you’re on the road, there’s a good chance that you will be spending a lot of time with your Smart phone, especially if you’re a passenger on long trips. Consider a good phone charging stand to both keep your phone charged and in a good viewing position.
  • Folding step stool
As handy as stepstools are, they take up space in your RV. So get one that folds up. Then you can quickly unfold to use and refold to easily stow.
  • Wheel chocks
Never leave out this important safety precaution.
  • Slide-out lube and protectant *
If your RV has a slide-out, prevent the slide-rail from getting stuck, rusty, or corroded.
  • Hose splitter
A hose splitter for campground water connections gives you an outside water hose for washing and other things, as well as fresh water inside your RV, all at the same time.
  • Extra drinking water hose *
Carry a good, FDA approved water hose to hook up to fresh water when you arrive at your campsite.
  • RV water filter *
No contamination and nasty parasites for you. Add a water filter to your fresh water hose for pure, clean water.
  • RV toilet tissue *
Take care of your RV plumbing system so it can take care of you. RV-safe toilet tissue is clog resistant, biodegradable, and safe for campsite septic tanks.
  • RV toilet treatment solution *
Having easy access to bathroom facilities is one of the biggest perks of RV camping. From tiny travel trailers to huge Class A motorhomes, it’s wise to use a campground friendly toilet treatment solution for comfort, sanitation, and a fresh smelling RV.
  • Don’t forget the sewer kit *
There is really nothing more to say.
  • Disposable gloves
Camping is dirty and RV camping also involves connecting and disconnecting sewer hoses. Therefore, disposable gloves = good idea.
  • Heavy duty tape
Durable and flexible, it can handle so many quick repair situations. Duct tape, Gorilla, or T-Rex tape are good examples. Don’t roll without a roll.
  • Outdoor extension cords
You will absolutely need at least one for your power hookups at campsites. Make sure your cords are long (at least 25 feet) and outdoor rated.
  • Head lamp
When you need your hands free while you also need light, a head lamp is very “handy.” Great for setting up camp at night, walking dogs, or checking out things in dark places.
  • Solar lights
Individual lights, light strings, or solar ropes will keep your campsite well lit. They charge during the day with no drain on your RV power. You can even get the type that can be turned off when not needed.
  • Solar lantern
Use the sun instead of your RV power. There are all kinds of solar lanterns available, even compact and expandable, which is perfect for stowing in RVs where space is limited.
  • Backpacks
Bring along a backpack or two (or more, depending on number of travelers) for carrying gear for hiking and other activities or on-the-road emergencies.

RV camping tip.

Campfire Cones

What is camping without s’mores? Here’s a great twist on the campfire tradition. You decide on the degree of “meltedness.”

Ingredients:

  • Ice cream cones (Keebler Waffle Cones work very well.)
  • Aluminum foil
  • “S’mores” ingredients/filling ideas:
    Mini marshmallows
Chocolate chips (or caramel, butterscotch, or peanut butter chips)
    Peanut butter
    Sliced strawberries or bananas

Campfire Cones

Line the cone with peanut butter. Then stuff it with mini marshmallows and chocolate chips or add sliced strawberries and bananas. Or do both. Skip any of the ingredients, or maybe even add almonds. Make your own creation!

Wrap individually with foil and choose a method to heat it all up.

  • Bake.
  • Grill.
  • Put it on the campfire.

It can be a little easier to handle than the traditional s’more.
This is a combination of similar recipes.

And now.... a word from our customers

"The team of Jim Cason and Savio at Leale’s RV rocks! I have been there three times, and two times were emergencies. Jim and Savio are able to squeeze me in last minute, so that my van is up and running in no time. My vans are commercial trucks, and any down time is lost business. Definitely appreciate their professionalism. They are knowledgeable and quality of work is unquestionable."
